Insiders Relive Presidential Election

Two presidential campaign advisers with an insider’s perspective on the 2008 election will headline Michigan Political Leadership Program’s annual dinner and breakfast.

Republican strategist Mike Murphy and former U.S. Congressman Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee will offer insights into the election and administration of President Barack Obama.

“Mike Murphy is one of a new breed of political advisers,” said IPPSR Director Doug Roberts. “He’s worked in U.S. Sen. John McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign and he’s worked for Gov. John Engler in Michigan.”

Ford served in Congress for 10 years, is chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council and a friend and adviser to Obama, primary rival Hillary Clinton and to former President Bill Clinton. He’s also a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.

“This will be a great opportunity to relive some of the most dramatic moments of the 2008 election and to herald a new administration with MPLP’s graduates and alumni,” said Roberts.

The Feb. 26 dinner at Livonia’s Laurel Manor, and Feb. 27 West Michigan breakfast at Noto’s Old World Italian Dining in Grand Rapids, are two of the state’s largest multi-partisan gatherings. Thursday’s dinner is set to start at 6 p.m. Friday’s breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m.

The 14th annual dinner and 7th annual breakfast support MPLP, a program of Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR). MPLP helps develop the skills needed for Michigan’s leaders of the future to serve as successful elected officeholders and citizen activists.

Since 1992 nearly 500 people, from all walks of life and all corners of the state, are MPLP alumni. Nearly a quarter of them have put their skills to work as candidates, officeholders or leaders in their communities, region, state and nation.

MPLP is considered unique in the nation for its full scholarship, multi-partisan approach and curriculum that balances hands-on experiences with exposure to leading authorities on political campaigns, public policy, media and community engagement.

The dinner and breakfast are open to the public. Tickets are $125 each. Tables are valued at $1,250, and sponsorships begin at $2,500.

More information is available at MPLP or by contacting Katherine Cusick by e-mail or 517.353.1357.
