Getting Back in Circulation
March 16, 2010
Q: I’ve been a state employee since I got out of college, but I don’t know how much longer I’ll have my job. I’ve been thinking about going to some networking events to see what the opportunities are. Any tips for someone who’s been out of circulation for a long time?
A: Congratulations on your gumption and your proactive approach. It’s better to expect the best and prepare for the worst. Many of the best jobs, especially with small companies, are never advertised but are secured through knowing people and word of mouth. Some companies don’t even know they need someone until they meet that person. Networking is a great way to create and seize opportunities. Here are some tips:
- Prepare. Go on the host organization’s website and get to know its mission and activities so you can talk intelligently with the people who are connected with it. Look at its board of directors and staff and make a list of the people you would like to meet and talk with. You’ll recognize the names when you see their nametags.
- Arrive on time before everyone starts to form groups that are hard to break into. Approach people who are standing alone or in pairs and begin with a firm handshake, a smile and solid eye contact.
- Start the conversation by introducing yourself and asking them about themselves.
- Have your 10-second “elevator speech” ready. This is your answer to the question, “What do you do?” It is the essence of your work in an interesting nutshell. Before the event, write it down and rehearse it so you can say it smoothly and with enthusiasm. Stress the benefits of what you do rather than giving a laundry list of your duties.
- Look and act confident.
- Bring current business cards and exchange them.
- Wear your nametag on the right side, because it’s easier for people to read it when shaking hands.
- Excuse yourself when the conversation lags or a person acts restless by saying, “I know you have many other people you’d like to talk with. It was nice meeting you and I hope to see you another time.”
- Follow up within 48 hours with one or two people with whom you connected.
- Be yourself and enjoy yourself!
